Site Waste Permit

Paul Downing

A Site Waste Permit is for recycling businesses and waste businesses. It is also required for recycling centres. Metal recyclers and other waste treament facilities. This can include yards recycling construction and demolition waste. You may or may not need a site waste permit if you are conducting certain activities.

When deciding to apply for a site waste permit, you will need to consider the following.

Location of Site Waste Permit

  • Is my site close to a nature reserve
  • Is my site above an aquifer
  • Is my site in an air quality management area (AQMA)
  • If my site caught fire what environmental receptors are downwind
  • Is my site next to a SSSI (site of special scientific interest)
  • Is my site suitable for the operations I want to start
  • Does my site drain to the surface water or is there a sealed drainage system

The Environment Agency have a regulatory duty to protect the environment. It makes sense that in certain areas they have an exclusion zone within which you cannot recycle or treat waste. EA standard rules permits reflect these exclusions. If you do want to operate in an exclusion area. You will need to apply for a bespoke permit. Standard rules permits are cheaper and easier to apply for. However there may not be one that matches your business activity. Because, you may also want higher tonnages, more codes or different activities. Waste permits used to be called waste management licences.

We have successfully helped therefore many organisations apply for an obtain a permit to operate a recycling business. We also have experience across many industry sectors. This is backed up by over 30 years of industry experience from many of our associates. We can help scope your application and decide what supporting documents you need to submit. The permit application therefore is not just a case of submitting a few forms.
