Category B Vehicles Permit

Paul Downing

A category B vehicles permit is also known as a breakers licence or ELV permit.

Category B Vehicles Permit – what is it?

It is a permit issued by the Environment Agency that allows you to buy insurance write offs and break them for spares.

Category B Vehicles Permit – Why do I need one?

Cat B vehicles are classed as “waste” which has a defined meaning in UK law. If you want to break them, cut them, shred or “treat” them in any way, then you are acting as a waste treatment facility and you need a special permit. If you take parts off of ELV’s without a permit you are operating illegally.

How Do I Get A Permit?

There are several types of permit with tonnages ranging from 750 tonnes per year to unlimited. The smallest ones only allow you to store up to 10 vehicles. Each permit has strict geographical conditions. For example your site cannot be closer than 10m to a stream or closer than 50m to a protected woodland. If your site location does not meet these conditions then you cannot apply for a standard rules permit. You need to apply to the Environment Agency and supply information on drainage, fire prevention, security, technical competence amongst other detail.

Alternatively call Paul Downing & Associates who will therefore do everything for you. We have years of experience in applying for these sorts of permits. Please see our Google Reviews and testimonials from old clients.
