Metal Recycling Permit

If you are a registered scrap metal dealer. You will probably already have a metal recycling permit issued by the Environment Agency. The permit allows you to store and treat metals by sizing, crushing or shearing for recycling purposes. We have been working with several waste companies on variations and compliance issues. Such as the requirement for fire prevention plans, sealed drainage systems, secure storage and also environmental risk procedures.

Update 2025 – There is now a specific metal recycling permit specifically for sites that recycle metals only. The permit does not allow ELV depollution. It allows 25,000 tonnes per annum and simplifies the permit process. As a new standard rules permit it lists all of the activities and codes that you will probably need. Should you need additional waste codes or additional treatments, then you will therefore need to apply for a bespoke permit.
